AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency syndrome]

AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency Syndrome]

AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency Syndrome] is  caused by the Human Immuno deficiency Virus (HIV), a member of a group of viruses called retrovirus, which have an envelope enclosing the RNA genome .

  • Acquired →acquired during life time
  • Immuno deficiency →Immune System Weak
  • Syndrome →Group of System
  • AIDS is not Congenital diseases(which are present in the child from birth)

AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency syndrome]

PATHOGEN :- HIV – I Virus (Retro virus →genetic material →RNA)

1st case:- In world →USA →1981

1st case:- In India →Chennai →1986

AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency syndrome]

Mode of Transmission:-

  • Through sexual Route[Also by artificial Insemination]
  • Through Parental Route[By contaminated blood transfusion or By sharing of needles by drug abusers]
  • From mother to foetus(trans-placental Route)
  • From mother to infant(via Colostrum)

  • AIDS:- Spread through Body fluids

AIDS do not spread through:-

  • Physical contact (Hugging, kissing, Shaking Hands)
  • Sharing meals
  • Mosquito bites

#Pathogenesity:-

AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency syndrome]

* GP-120 of HIV virus has complementary with CD4 receptor of macrophage and T-helper cell.

TREATMENTS:-

  • Reverse transcriptase inhibitor
  • Integrase inhibitor
  • Protease inhibitors
  • HAART(highly active anti-retroviral therapy)

DIAGNOSIS:-

  1. Screening Test:- ELISHA Test
  2. Confirmatory Test:- Western blot test

SYMPTOMS:-

AIDS [Acquired Immuno deficiency syndrome]

1. Asymptomatic phase(Usually 5-10 years)

  • Incubation Period (IP):-Time difference between Entry of pathogen and appearance of symptoms.
  • Window Period (WP):- Time between Infection and Laboratory Detection.
  • In Normal Infection:- WP > IP
  • In AIDS:- IP >>>WP

 2. ARC (AIDS Related complex)

  • Prolonged Cough
  • Repeated diarrhoea →weight loss →AIDS →Slim diseases
  • Swollen Lymph nodes

3. Full Blown “AIDS”

  • Normal T- helper count (900million/litre →Less than 200 million/litre )

Opportunistic Infections:-

  1. Tuberculosis – Mycobacterium avium
  2. Pneumonia – Pneumonia carnii
  3. Kaposi sarcoma – skin cancer
  4. Candidiasis – Fungal infection
  5. Encephalitis

Prevention:-

  • AIDS is spread by “conscious Behaviour Pattern”
  • Don’t die of Ignorance

  • NACO ⇒ National AIDS Control organization
  • NGO’s ⇒ Non- Governmental organization
  • WHO ⇒ World AIDS Day (1st December)
